Emotional Control and Intelligence

In my experience as a provider of carefully calibrated doses of Neurofeedback treatment or training tailored to individual optimal benefit I have made several consistent observations over time.  One of the most frequently reported experiences of  those who have undergone Professional Neurofeedback in the Neurenics system has been emotional control, without effort that may indicate potential change in the amygdala component of the limbic system, the main anatomical brain site where emotion is processed.  This is possibly due to metabolism, enriched synaptic connections and may also involve the Hippocampus, the site of memory consolidation in the brain. Many people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) experience adverse and painful emotion on recollection of the precipitating traumatic event.  The affective response in PTSD produces distress and some people following multiple sessions of Professional Neurofeedback report newly experienced and a surprising controlled emotional response that is effortless and results in reduction of distress.  On another level, negotiation in the workplace with similarly controlled emotions wins the day and everyone is a winner when emotions are controlled without effort.  The mechanism that produces this outcome is essentially the same! The optional choice is heightened emotionality and hostile reactivity – a trait of the aggressive Type A Personality individual and also for the PTSD victim but, in different ways.  So, we can learn that both PTSD and negotiating which on the surface seem to be worlds apart in terms of human experience can both benefit from emotional control and lack of negative reacting and responding.  This is a discovered and beneficial consequence of ongoing neurofeedback that begs for a well designed scientific study that might establish validity and reliability of this ongoing reported phenomenon from a variety of sources.
